01 The journey
Spitzkoppe rises about 700 metres straight out of flat gravel plains, and it is older than almost anything around it. The granite is warm to the touch at sunset and cold by midnight.
This is the trip for people who would rather sleep on the ground than in a lodge. We hike the formations, find the San rock paintings that have been there for thousands of years, and then sit still while one of the darkest skies on earth comes out overhead.
02 Highlights
03 Day by day
Out to the granite
Depart Windhoek and drive north-west onto the plains. Make camp in the late afternoon, then walk out to the rock paintings and the arch for sunset. Dinner at camp, then the stars.
Climb, then home
An early hike or scramble while it is cool — the routes are chosen to suit the group. Break camp mid-morning and drive back to Windhoek.
